Work Description
(“Chura” is an Okinawan word meaning “beautiful,” “pure,” or “splendid.”)
This piece is from my collection Sketches of Seasons and Scenes, which I composed with the thought: “Is there a charming piece for players who cannot reach octaves?”
As the title suggests, the piece evokes the image of Okinawa’s tropical beaches. In truth, I have never actually been to Okinawa, and although Minna Beach—the subtitle—is a real place, I simply borrowed the name after finding pictures of it through Google image searches… a rather unromantic backstory, I must admit.
The music is highly rhythmic, and without precise timing, the hands will not align properly. The main theme uses a modified pentatonic scale to create a Ryukyuan (Okinawan) flavor. Although the piece avoids octave double notes, it employs many applied techniques, so it requires a fair amount of practice.
