Work Description
This piece comes from my short collection Sketches of Seasons and Scenes, which I composed in response to the question: “Is there a charming piece for players who cannot reach octaves?”
“Clignancourt” is a district in the 18th arrondissement of Paris, known especially for its famous flea market, which appears in many travel guides. Nearby stands Montmartre Hill with the Sacré-Cœur Basilica, giving the area a stylish touch; however, Clignancourt itself is rather chaotic in atmosphere. Safety is not particularly good, and the streets lined with shops run by African immigrants are lively, filled at times with blaring car horns and the bustle of people.
I tried to capture this somewhat “typical Paris”—a multicultural, lively mélange—in the music.
The foundation is a refreshing, baroque-style passagework filled with scales, but occasional dissonances collide here and there, creating a harmonic sense that resists a simple, straightforward resolution.
Technically, it is not intended for beginners; it requires advanced finger independence and careful planning of fingerings.
