Work Description
The Japanese title “雪消月(ゆきげつき)” literally means “the month when the snow begins to melt.”
It is an old lunar-calendar word referring to the season of early March in the modern calendar—a time when winter gradually gives way to spring. Although the term is rarely heard today, it beautifully evokes the delicate transition between the two seasons.
This year felt unusually warm compared with previous winters; even in early February there were days that felt almost like early spring. Inspired by this, I decided to write a piece that anticipates the coming season.
At the request for “a piece that could be played in a café,” I composed something atmospheric yet gently rhythmic. At the indicated tempo, the performance lasts about three and a half minutes, but playing it more slowly brings out a different character. Performers are welcome to adjust the tempo slightly to suit their preferences and the ambience of the moment.
At the written tempo, the difficulty level is somewhat higher, but when played a little slower it should be accessible with modest practice. Like the sudden appearance of earth and fresh greenery as the snow melts away, the piece contains many rapid modulations—so please take care with the accidentals.
