Work Description
This piano collection is inspired by selected discourses from the Sutta Nipāta, the oldest surviving collection of Buddhist scriptures. Each piece develops the meaning and poetic rhythm of its source text into an instrumental musical work.
The opening piece, “The Rhinoceros Horn,” is based on one of the best-known discourses in the collection. The text is written entirely in verse according to an ancient poetic metre belonging to the Triṣṭubh tradition, with every stanza concluding with the refrain, “Wander alone like a rhinoceros.”
Particular care has been taken to preserve the original poetic metre as faithfully as possible while shaping it into a coherent musical composition. The result is a work that seeks to unite the structure of ancient Buddhist poetry with the expressive possibilities of the piano.
