Descripción de la obra
Luyten is the second work in the «New Horizon» series, composed as the successor to the previous piece, Centauri.
The title refers to Luyten, a relatively faint star located about twelve light-years from our Solar System. One of its known planets is believed to lie within the habitable zone, where conditions may be suitable for life.
In 2017, a musical signal was reportedly transmitted toward this planetary system as part of the search for extraterrestrial intelligence. If a scientifically advanced civilization were to exist there, it would truly be an encounter with the unknown. At one brief moment in the piece, listeners may notice a fleeting quotation of a familiar melody that evokes such a scene.
Although firmly rooted in the classical tradition, the work is composed with considerable freedom. As in Centauri, it incorporates a fugal passage, combining intricate polyphonic writing with an emphasis on memorable and accessible melodies.
Because the performer must traverse the full range of the piano keyboard, the work is technically demanding and intended for advanced pianists.
